What are the functions of the skin?

The skin protects against the environment and helps to regulate body temperature. It also helps maintain the body's fluid and salt balance. Nerve receptors in the skin provide information about an individual's surroundings. These receptors are related to the perception of touch, pain, pressure, and temperature.

What are the signs and symptoms of aging skin?

The skin is considered the largest organ of the body. Aging changes are externally visible as we all know: wrinkles, sagging skin, and dry skin are all indicators of the aging process. The skin gets thinner with age and tend to become pale and translucent. The number of melanocytes (pigment cells) decreases. The ones that remain get bigger and group together. This causes the age spots commonly observed on elderly skin.

Why is aging skin drier?

There are several reasons why the aging sking is dryer, including the following:

aging skin The number of sweat glands in the skin is decreased with age. This causes elderly people to sweat less. This lack of sweating makes the ability to regulate body temperature more difficult. This is more significant in hot weather. As a result, elderly people are more likely to develop dehydration and heat stroke.

dry skin The decreased number of not only sweat glands but also oil glands in the skin causes drier, scalier, and some times itchy skin.

scaly, itchy skin The blood flow to the skin is reduced.

Why do wrinkles develop with age?

With age the skin loses strength and elasticity, and therefore its ability to stretch. This makes the skin less able to smooth out, which may be part of the reason why wrinkles and sagging skin affect the elderly. This skin change begins earlier in women than in men. Now why do these changes occur? There are several reasons:

The layer of fat under the skin also becomes thinner with age. This is part of the reason for the thin, lean appearance of older people. It also contributes to loosening and wrinkling of the skin.

As mentioned above the content of water is reduced.

These changes make bruising and skin tears more common in elderly people. This occurs because the blood vessels in the skin become fragile and bleed easily. It is a fact that healing in older people may occur about 5 times more slowly than in younger people.

Are skin disorders more common in elderly people?

Skin disorders are also more likely with age. Environmental and inherited factors are more likely to cause skin changes in elderly people. It is estimated that about 8 to 9 out of 10 elderly people are affected by some kind of skin disorder.
