Aloe
vera is native to Africa. From ancient times the plant has been used in
treating swellings, burns, infections and parasites.
There are over 500 species of aloe growing in different climates
worldwide. Aloe vera recognized properties include:
Extensive
research has shown that the gel has an impressive ability to heal
wounds, ulcers and burns speeding up the healing rate. A newly discovered
compound in aloe is currently being studied for its ability to
strengthen the body's natural resistance. Studies have shown this
compound to
boost T-lymphocyte cells that aid the immune system.
The
plant contains active ingredients including essential oils, amino acids,
minerals, vitamins, enzymes and glycoproteins. As a food supplement, aloe
is said to facilitate digestion, aid in blood and lymphatic circulation,
as well as kidney, liver and gall bladder functions.
Aloe
contains at least three anti-inflammatory fatty acids that are helpful for
the skin.
It reduces inflammation, and redness, and accelerate wound healing. It
can aid in keeping the skin elastic, and has been used in the control of
acne and eczema. It can relieve itching due to insect bites and allergies.
Aloe
has a moisturizing effect on the skin and is a common remedy for sunburn
and skin irritation. It is often used direct on the skin in the treatment of minor burns and
wounds. At least in one scientific study Aloe vera was shown to be effective in treating psoriasis.
