"Autoimmune"
means that the immune system (which normally protects against foreign invaders of the body, such as infections) turns and attacks tissues
(ex. skin, joints, lungs, etc.) of the body. Examples of common systemic autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, diabetes mellitus,
Vitiligo, Addison’s disease, thyroiditis, and many others. In some cases
Vitiligo may be associated to any of the following conditions:
Pernicious anaemia, anaemia caused by a deficit in the absorption of Vit B12.
It is caused by an immune disorder that affects the capacity of the gastric cells to produce a factor necessary to absorb that
vitamin.
Thyroid disease, which as Vitiligo can also have an immune
origin and may include Hashimoto thyroiditis. Another thyroid related
autoimmune disease is Graves' disease. The disease process can eventually
destroy the thyroid, resulting in hypothyroidism; but usually the person
has an enlarged thyroid gland with normal or mildly abnormal thyroid
function tests. Persons with Hashimoto's thyroiditis have autoantibodies
against several different proteins in their thyroid gland. A family
history of thyroid disease is not unusual.
Addison's disease, Addison's disease is a rare endocrine or hormonal disorder. It occurs in all age groups and afflicts men and women equally. The disease is characterized by weight loss, muscle weakness, fatigue, low blood pressure, and sometimes darkening of the skin in both exposed and nonexposed parts of the body.
Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of the hormone cortisol and in some cases, the hormone aldosterone. For this reason, the disease is sometimes called chronic adrenal
insufficiency.
Diabetes, Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy.
Both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles. There are two major types of diabetes:
Type 1 - A disease in which the body does not produce any insulin, most often occurring in children and young adults. People with Type 1 diabetes must take daily insulin injections to stay alive. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 5 to 10 percent of diabetes.
Type 2 - A metabolic disorder resulting from the body's inability to make enough, or properly use, insulin. It is the most common form of the disease. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 to 95 percent of diabetes.
Alopecia areata, Alopecia areata (AA) is a non-scarring, inflammatory, hair loss disease that can affect men, women and children. The factors that activate the onset of alopecia areata and the mechanisms of its development are not fully understood. Circumstantial evidence suggests alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease where cells of an individual's own immune system prevent hair follicles from producing hair fiber.
Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome is a rare disease, it is important to geneticists and immunologists because
it is the first and only systemic (bodywide) autoimmune disease whose cause has been attributable to a defect in a single gene.
