What
is dry skin, why does it occur?
Dry skin occurs when the
water content of the skin is decreased for any reason. The surface of the skin holds a certain amount of water.
This water is important for normal skin function. When the water content decreases, the skin becomes dry, itchy, and
it feels uncomfortable.
Are there other signs and symptoms associated with dry skin?
Yes, there are others signs and symptoms including: scaling, redness, tenderness,
chapping of the skin, itching, fissures and cracks on the skin surface.
Who suffer from dry skin and why?
Some individuals have a genetic predisposition. Also as people age, their skin tends to become drier.
During winter time low humidity and the use of indoor heating systems cause skin
dryness. The use of soap along with hot showers and baths also cause skin
dryness.
How is the dry skin diagnosed?
Diagnosis is based on the following symptoms: itchy dry skin that feels
uncomfortable with or without scaling, redness, tenderness, chapping of the skin, itching, fissures,
and cracks on the skin surface.
Are there long-term effects of dry skin?
Severe and untreated dry skin can be followed by eczema.
What
can be done to treat dry skin?
The following are tips that will complement your treatment of dry
skin:
Limit amount
of soap you use.*
Limit the
length of time you are exposed to hot water.*
Use a humidifier to keep adequate indoor levels of humidity.
Drink enough fluids (eight glasses of water per day).
Wear a hat, scarf and gloves when you go outside in cold weather.
Protect your lips with a lip care product.
*
Both soap and hot water tend to decrease the barrier that keeps water from
evaporating from the skin.
If
the above recommendations are not enough, "DermaBest ® Restorative Gel"
is recommended. It is not a "moisturizer". It
works by healing, regenerating, protecting and nourishing the skin. As a
result the skin is capable of maintaining its normal water content. This
means that it has both a temporary hydrating effect and a long term improvement
of the overall condition of your skin.
