For many people scars are synonym a disfigurement. This can prevent them from enjoying life to the fullest. There are two main types of scars: older scars that are pale or white in color, and newer scars, that still bear the red or purple colour from a recent skin damage. The skin has a great capacity to regenerate itself. Scars are a remaining signs of the skin's attempt to heal itself. While normally the skin is quickly repaired, the new skin can have a different appearance. This is frequently persistent in the form of a scar that does not fade away. In general, scars from surgery or injury take from six to twelve months to fade to their final color.

New scars are red or purple in color as a result of damaged blood vessels and inflammation. These are hyperpigmented scars. Older scars are white in color. As a result of the initial inflammation and damage to blood vessels and cells loss of pigment-producing cells occurs. Because of the loss of skin pigment the scar becomes hypopigmented (pale). Genetic factors are believed to play a role in the scarring process. For some people scarring may more disfiguring than for others. New treatments have been developed that can help scars fade away.

Scars are a mark that indicates the skin's attempt to heal itself. When damage to the skin's top layer occurs, cells quickly multiply to form new cells to fill in the gap. When a wound goes deeper into the underlying skin tissue, cells that form collagen are stimulated and they fill in the gap producing abundant fibrous connective tissue. If the density of this new tissue is relatively small, it is usually replaced by normal a skin layer over time. When the mass of new tissue is relatively extensive it is associated to cell damage and the fibrous tissue remains. As a result a persistent scar remains.
