Insurance
coverage for Vitiligo light treatment
Many health insurance companies will initially reject treatments for
Vitiligo including Artificial
ultraviolet light
treatment (phototherapy). They may also offer to cover only part of your treatment. They base their position on the claim that Vitiligo is only "cosmetic". Obviously that is not true. In
order to obtain coverage for your UV light treatment the following is
recommended:
Have your dermatologist write a letter to the insurance company. Your doctor should explain the psychosocial impact of Vitiligo. It should also mention the risks of Vitiligo, such as serious sunburn.
Send a letter to the health insurance approval dept. explaining the effects of Vitiligo. You could emphasize the same aspects as your doctor but from a more personal point of view. Explain how it has affected you socially and emotionally and mention any occasion in which your may have suffered from sunburn, if this has been the case.
Follow up with phone calls, and any supporting evidence.
Most insurance companies will eventually provide you with coverage.
Insurance companies have defined each condition by a diagnosis code. Mention this code when you call them or write to them. Mentioning this code can speed up the process when you call. In the US the diagnosis code for Vitiligo is 709.01.
