Vitiligo
surgical treatment
Surgical
treatment is considered as a last option. It is used in a limited number
of cases. Surgical treatment
of Vitiligo should be particularly avoided in an individual who scars abnormally or
has lost pigment after a small wound or scrape. Surgical therapies for the
treatment of Vitiligo are still viewed as experimental because their effectiveness and side effects
have not been fully defined.
In autologous skin grafts, normally pigmented skin from one area of a patient's body
is taken and attached to an area of Vitiligo. This type of skin grafting is sometimes used for patients with small, stable patches of
Vitiligo.
Traditionally these are the main criteria considered for the surgical treatment of
Vitiligo:
Vitiligo has
been stable for at least one year.
Vitiligo
has not or no longer respond to PUVA treatment.
There
is no history of loss of skin color after
suffering a small cut or scrape.
Vitiligo
is classified as "Segmental Vitiligo"
(affected area only on one side of the body).
Skin grafts
work in a majority of well-selected cases. The site from which the skin is taken
(commonly the thigh or buttocks) is often left with scarring. The treated area
may also present some of the following changes:
-
a cobblestone
appearance
-
a spotty pigmentation
-
no repigmentation.
